A Different Side of Old Las Vegas

Just south of Downtown Las Vegas, the John S. Park Historic Neighborhood offers something increasingly rare in the valley: early Las Vegas architecture, mature tree-lined streets, and homes with nearly a century of history.

The neighborhood developed primarily from the 1930s through the early 1950s, encompassing the historic Park Place and Vega Verde additions. Its homes reflect several eras of early Las Vegas residential architecture, including Tudor Revival, Colonial Revival, Minimal Traditional, and classic Ranch styles.

One of the most distinctive features of John S. Park is the neighborhood itself. Curving streets and mature landscaping give portions of the area a secluded residential feel that stands apart from the surrounding Downtown street grid. The neighborhood's design was influenced by Garden City planning principles, creating a setting that feels surprisingly intimate for a location so close to the center of Las Vegas.

The homes are just as varied. Rather than rows of identical floor plans, John S. Park contains an eclectic collection of houses built across several decades. Original fireplaces, hardwood floors, vintage tile, built-ins, casement windows, and other period details can still be found throughout the neighborhood, although individual homes range from remarkably preserved originals to extensively remodeled properties.

John S. Park's significance extends beyond its architecture. The neighborhood grew during a transformative period in Las Vegas history, as construction of Hoover Dam, wartime development, and the city's expanding economy brought new residents to Southern Nevada. Many of the people who helped shape early Las Vegas lived in and around this part of the city.

In 2003, the John S. Park Historic Neighborhood was added to both the City of Las Vegas Historic Property Register and the National Register of Historic Places. In 2010, the American Planning Association named John S. Park one of its Great Neighborhoods in America, recognizing its architecture, planning, history, and enduring sense of place.

Today, John S. Park remains one of the best places in Las Vegas to experience the city's residential history firsthand. Its location puts residents minutes from Downtown Las Vegas, the Arts District, Fremont Street, and the Las Vegas Strip while preserving the character of an established neighborhood.
